I was just reflecting on how far I've come. I've been in business since 2010 with a small break in between and can't believe at times how I actually got started. As you can see from the title, this is Part III. Part II was actually published on 8/30/2011. (To read Part I and Part II, just click the links.)
Let me start first by saying, it hasn't been easy. Hence the relaunch of this blog in May of this year. There were times when I wanted to give up because things weren't going as planned or as fast as I thought they should but I'm still here. I believe God has a plan for me AND this business. This business was created out of wanting to help an industry that has been dependent solely on their skills and not their business sense. There are plenty of salon owners and independent stylists who are not business savvy AT ALL. However, they'd rather sink than ask for help. As I stated in Part II, this business was birthed from helping a stylist working 12+ hr days in the salon and then going home to do all types of admin work, like responding to emails, editing pics and videos, going on tours and giving classes, coordinating photo shoots, looking for stylists to rent booths and so on. I thought if she was going through this, there must've been others as well. After helping her, I was inspired to create a business and Right-Hand Mrs. was formed.
Prior to starting this business in 2010, I had no knowledge of the beauty industry whatsoever. I have a BS degree in Health Professions and was a Paramedic back in NY. All I knew was that I had strong administrative and organizational skills and paired them up with an untouched market. I had no idea what I would find once I engulfed myself in the industry. No, I'm not a licensed Cosmetologist but I became a real student. I volunteered with various artists, my 1st client gave me full reign to do basically anything I wanted in order to get my skills up and it has benefited me to the max. I even took a $10/hr part-time job as a Salon Receptionist at JCPenney just so I could see how to run my business from a corporate standpoint. I was shocked to find that I was more advanced than they were. I had to pat myself on the back for that because I would doubt myself so much. I was better than I thought. After that experience, my confidence had definitely been boosted. When it was time for me to resign and get back to running my business full-time, I was told that I was the best Receptionists they had for a long time by both the staff and clients. One thing I brought with me to that job was a business mentality. That's how I operate with the artists that I work with now. No need to look over my shoulder to make sure I'm doing what you requested. When you look good, I look good. I'm vested in making sure your business looks as professional as possible. We have to change the unprofessional perception of this industry and change it quick. Ok, that's another topic. I'm sure I will beat that in the head in other blog posts.I just wanted to let you in on a lil bit about me, how I got started and what I'm trying to do. So many stylists think that they can do it all alone. Soon, you will crash and burn. You must know when to gracefully bow out before it's too late.
With that said, I've tried to help one stylist at a time but I am ready to help more on a larger scale. I'm thinking of starting a few admin classes in the near future. Let's bring the business back to the industry.
