7 Things To Consider Before Becoming a Traveling Stylist

I come across people all the time that want to get into becoming  a traveling stylist. As glamorous as this idea may sound, it can be very fun to get into and very time consuming as well. Before starting, just be sure to make an informed decision and see where it can take you.

7 Things To Consider

1- Do you like traveling?
Be slow to answer this question. This is a different type of traveling. It's not like a vacation. You are packing and unpacking constantly. Perhaps, living out of a suitcase. If you are young without kids or without a husband, you may enjoy this lifestyle. If you already have a family, it can be very time consuming. Not only do you have to pack for yourself, you also have to consider the household as well. Now, if you have a Nanny, you go. One way to get around this would be to travel on the weekends and bring your family along for the ride. JUST SOMETHING TO MAKE YOU SAY HMMMMM.

2- How many licenses do you have?
Don't get into trouble with the state for operating without a license. If you are limited to one state, then start traveling within that state. If you know what state you want to travel to, be sure to apply for reciprocity for that state. Let's do things the right way in 2012.

3- Where will you be working?
Be sure to secure a salon to work out of. Very important to see if you can rent a booth if you are already booked. Ask friends/family to ask their hair stylists if they have any available booths for rent. Be sure that the salon is comparable to your image. IMAGE IS EVERYTHING.

4- Do you have money stashed away?
If you have to travel, can you afford to keep money to the side in order to get to your destination. If getting this money together is a hardship, this may not be a good time. Save up before you make that move.

5- Do you have family/friends in other states?
That may seem like a silly question. Although the answer is yes, will they be willing to allow you to bunk with them while you are in town. Part of traveling is to be smart. Choose a state where you have a support system. That way, the only expenses coming out of your pockets will be to travel and all the money made from your jam-packed schedule will be all yours.

6- What are your most successful forms of advertising?
No sense in traveling to other states if no one knows who you are over there. Become a commodity and then consider traveling. Don't get caught up in the idea of traveling. Get caught up in marketing yourself. Craigslist, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are great places to start. These are great places to feel your market out and create the buzz. Put it out there that you are considering taking your skills on the road and see what the response is. You'll be surprised. People will begin to shout states out to you. Conduct a poll and the most responses win, if its feasible for you. It must ALWAYS  be feasible for you.

7- Do people know you in other states?
If you have a few people that know you in other states, put them to work for you. Have them scout the scenery, recommend hair salons to check out, the best areas to focus on and the best one of all, have them get a group of girls together. If they really want you to come to their state, make sure they get enough girls to have you booked for your stay. That way everyone WINS.

If this has been helpful to you, be sure to leave a comment and share it on Twitter and Facebook. Oh, and for God sake, please don't forget to subscribe to this blog. Thank you so much for such kind words. Although I'm sad to hear that great info isn't circulating in the Industry, I'm happy to have been one of the most informative ones. Everyone wants the glitz and glam but no one wants the hard work that comes along with it.
