Approximately 3 weeks ago, I posted up on Instagram that everyone now a days is either an Extension Specialist, Closure Expert or Wig Maker. Although there is nothing wrong with knowing how to do any of the three, it is important to become very skilled in an area of expertise and be known for that thing. That way people will specifically seek you out when they want what they feel you are the best in. Great advice that I've heard by studying Janel "Cocoa Mane" Sealy-Smith, Kiyah Wright and Ursula Stephen.
Which leads me into Finding Your Niche and Running With It. What happens when you have created your own lane by finding a niche, people have replicated it all over the country and you have never gotten the recognition that you deserve for it? That is exactly what has happened to this young lady by the name of SimSim from Brooklyn, NY.
When I decided to feature SimSim on today's blog, I had no idea what her responses to my questions would be. I was just intrigued by the fact that this young 33 year old stylist had indeed found her niche and ran with it. This look and style has been seen on Instagram, Facebook, in magazines and all over the internet. People search for her to get this look that so many others have replicated. It's time you met the Innovator of the hairstyle coined by SimSim as the "SimSimma" and hear her journey.
iConnectors: What was your inspiration behind the "Sim Simma"?
SimSim: The "Sim Simma" originally came from a photo shoot I did back in February 2013. The original hairstylist for the shoot cancelled and I was then contacted with the image to fill in for her.
iConnectors: When did you create the "Sim Simma"?
SimSim: The "Sim Simma" was created that same day because instead of re-creating the original hairstylist exact look for the model, I styled the hairstyle to suit my work cause I hate feeling like a copycat.
iConnectors: When did you realize the "Sim Simma" was special?
SimSim: When I put up the hairstyle with the original model Onike on my StyleSeat and StyleSeat made it the "Hair of the Week" and also put it up on their Instagram page as well.
iConnectors: Has the "Sim Simma" been featured in any magazines? If yes, where can people find them?
SimSim: I have been featured in Black Beauty Hair Magazine in the UK and Naturally Happy Hair magazine. You can go to their website www.naturallyhappyhair.com in order to purchase the issue.
iConnectors: How does it feel to see others re-create your look?
SimSim: Sometimes it feels good because I'm actually inspiring others. I'm just like them going after a dream that no one believes in except me and God. Then there are times I feel annoyed because I see others getting credit for my work because their name is more established than mines. A lot of people don't know that it originally came from me but thanks to my family I'm learning how to deal with that negative feeling.
iConnectors: Do people really seek you out for the "Sim Simma"? If yes, where is the furthest someone has traveled to get it?
SimSim: Yes they do. Most of my clients are in the Tri-State area but I get a lot of request to visit different states and countries for them to have the look as well.
iConnectors: How did you know to market and maximize your exposure with this look?
SimSim: This is my most requested look for this year, people are seeing it on a lot of blogs, wedding hairstyle pages, natural hair Instagram pages, plus different websites, so basically I just went with flow.
iConnectors: Do you see yourself teaching a class in the near future?
SimSim: I don't see it anytime soon because I'm still learning.. It would be like a student teaching students.
iConnectors: BONUS- Word of advice for any up and coming artists out there.
SimSim: Keep your eyes on God. He's the only one that can guide you through this. Also, when you get in that depressed stage, focus on everything that you have achieved on your list already. Don't focus on what you're still trying to obtain because one negative can make you forget the hundreds of positive things that have already happened for you.
iConnectors: How can one book an appointment with you?
SimSim: SimSim Stylez in Brooklyn, NY Ph: 718-495-0836

There you have it. This started out by expressing the importance of finding your niche and running with it and turned into something totally different. If you've seen this look before, know where it came from and who it was inspired by. If there is something that you can do with your eyes closed, that means you know that technique inside and out and it comes out flawless every time, that is your niche. Market and brand it til you think people are sick of you. Trust me, when they want that thing that they think they are sick of, they will call you because they know that you can deliver it.
Note to SimSim. All teachers/instructors were students too at one point. If this is your signature look that you created, you have the right to teach it because no one else taught it to you. You can do this and do it well.
