Instagram (IG) is a very popular social media platform created for everyday people to share photos with their family and friends. Coincidentally, more and more businesses are creatively using pictures to market and advertise like never before. Because the hair, beauty and fashion industries are highly visual, this platform is perfect in order to showcase your talents. Unfortunately, I've noticed for some that it isn't being done in the best way in order to increase your earning potential.
There are so many people, including myself, looking for talent on a daily basis. It has been so hard to do so because quite a few of the IG accounts that I come across have 4 major issues that should be addressed IMMEDIATELY before you unknowingly let more money slip through your fingers. No, I'm not a social media expert. What I do know is that I have to almost be a private investigator to find pertinent information that should be readily available on some of your "business" pages. Let's discuss the 4 elements that should readily made available in your bio. Let's stop leaving money on the table.
4 Reasons you may be losing money on Instagram are:
1. Your "business" page is private.
As an artist and entrepreneur, you are advertising to gain business. Having a private "business" page on Instagram is like opening your business for the day but keeping the doors locked. Customers can clearly see that you are inside waiting for them to come in but they have to wait until you come and unlock the door for them. Sounds crazy right? Now how many times could you have possibly lost a potential client because they didn't want to wait until you accepted their request. A public account says that you are open for business and they are welcome to take a look at what you have to offer. If you want some privacy, create a separate account for your personal life and make that private.
2. The state in which you are based is not mentioned.
Can someone see where you are located at a glance from your bio or do they have to visit your website in order to find out that information? The state in which you are based is pertinent information for a potential client to know and make an informed decision. How many times have you seen someone ask for a hair stylists or make-up artists based in NY or LA? Someone just may have you in mind in order to make a recommendation but can't remember where you are based. Do you expect them to have to do some major research to find that small but pertinent information out? Better yet, would you do it if you were them. Bottom line is, they are trying to help you out so make their job a lil easier by including your state in your bio.
3. No hashtag (#) to see all of your work in one place.
It can be very time consuming trying to sift through all of the posts on various artists pages to see their work. I know there is so much that goes into making an IG page interesting and keeping the interest of your clients and potential clients. Some people put up videos, flyers, humor and family pictures, inspirational quotes and so on. This is all great but we also want to see hair, make-up and fashion pictures. A cool way to get all of your work into one place is by creating your very own hashtag. Hashtags are not only meant for #bomb.com or #idothisformykids type of stuff. It is a great way to create your very own online look book. Next time you have an audition, give them your personal hashtag. To be honest, you are always auditioning for a gig if you have an online presence. So next time you think of filling your page with a bunch of other stuff, think twice. Which leads me right into #4.
4. Your "business" page is cluttered with "non-business" posts.
Grant it, it's your page and you can do whatever you want to do with it. Just keep in mind that when a potential client comes to your page, it's not cool to see you drunk in the club or pictures of you in the bed with your bae. There should be some level of professionalism seen on your "business" IG account. Again, if you want to show pics like that, create a private page and go all out. I also get that most people want their clients to see them as down to earth and seen as a real person but you can connect with your audience while using discretion.
By tweaking your IG page and making a few minor changes to your bio, you may just be surprised at how your income may increase.
